Can Arsenal defy history and win the Premier League without a consistent top goalscorer? It's a bold question, and one that has many fans and pundits intrigued.
No team has ever claimed the Premier League title without a player in the top 10 goal scorers, but Arsenal's current season is challenging that notion. With an impressive record of just two defeats in all competitions, a perfect Champions League run, and a comfortable six-point lead at the top of the Premier League, the Gunners are on fire.
But here's where it gets controversial: Arsenal's success is not built on the shoulders of a single prolific striker. While Manchester City leads the league in goals, Arsenal has managed to keep pace without a consistent goalscorer.
Erling Haaland, for example, has already netted an impressive 20 league goals this season, while Arsenal's top scorers in the division, Leandro Trossard and Viktor Gyokeres, have only managed five goals each. This is a far cry from the 97 goals Gyokeres scored in 102 games for Sporting in Portugal, a feat that prompted Arsenal to invest ÂŁ64m in the Swedish international.
However, Gyokeres has struggled to replicate that form, with recent performances suggesting a severe lack of confidence. In Arsenal's last league game against Liverpool, he managed only eight touches and failed to take a shot, and has scored just once from open play in the last 15 games.
Despite these struggles, Arsenal has only lost once when Gyokeres has started, a testament to the team's overall strength.
And this is the part most people miss: Arsenal's success this season is built on a collective effort, with goals spread across the team. The Gunners have had 13 different top-flight goal scorers this season, second only to Brighton's 15.
Mikel Arteta's side has also shown resilience in defense, conceding just 14 goals in 21 league games, fewer than any other side in the Premier League. This solid defense, coupled with the team's ability to score from set-pieces, has given Arsenal an added dimension and reduced their reliance on a single top-level goalscorer.
So, could Arsenal break the mold and win the title without a regular goalscorer? History says no, but with their current form and all-round strength, the Gunners are certainly giving it a good shot.
