Imagine a vibrant island, Mallorca, known for its sunny skies and bustling resorts. But here's where it gets controversial: what happens when winter arrives? Is it a ghost town, or does it still offer a unique charm?
Mallorca's winter weather is a bit of a wild card. This January, it's been a far cry from the typical clear skies and warm days. Instead, it's been a wet and grey affair. Even the usually tranquil resorts can feel lively when the sun shines, but what about when it doesn't?
This phenomenon isn't new. Come November, many resorts seem to hibernate. The revival of these destinations largely depends on how well they cater to active tourists, with cyclists often leading the way.
History, mostly anecdotal, tells tales of once-vibrant winter resorts. While there may have been specific exceptions, the months from November to March have consistently accounted for less than 15% of annual tourist numbers. Last January, despite some increased activity, Mallorca hosted 235,000 tourists. Compare that to the bustling months of July and August, when the island welcomed a staggering two million visitors. And among those January tourists, how many were second-home owners enjoying a quiet escape?
The resorts are designed to cater to masses of tourists. In Arenal, Alain Carbonell, vice president of the Arenal residents association, notes that even small grocery stores are now a rarity. "There aren't any left. We have to rely on the large supermarket chains." Residents often express their preference for the quiet winter months, but others yearn for the lively atmosphere of the peak season.
Carbonell adds that Palma Town Hall scales back its operations during the winter. "The cleanliness takes a noticeable dip." He claims that the town hall significantly reduces the workforce assigned to the area.
Pepe Tirado, president of the Acotur tourist services business association, highlights the challenges of keeping businesses open during the off-season. He believes fewer businesses are open this year and predicts a continuing decline. Tirado's association primarily operates in Playa de Palma and the Calvia resorts of Magaluf and Palmanova.
Tirado notes a decrease in tourists from the Imserso program, which he argues is vital for small businesses. Spanish pensioners, he explains, "buy many Mallorcan products to take to their children and grandchildren." While this sentiment is understandable, it's worth noting that Imserso packages are typically all-inclusive, and this tourism segment is not known for its spending power. Of the 235,000 tourists last January, the largest market was Spanish, with 100,000 visitors, not all part of the Imserso program.
The level of activity varies across resorts. Some resemble small towns, with a lively center and quieter outskirts. For instance, in Puerto Pollensa, while the frontline may be dormant, the entire town is not. Most of the tourism focus remains on Palma's center, where many hotels stay open year-round. In the island's interior, there is some activity, but it is limited, as reflected in the tourist numbers.
