Long Island may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of stoner doom music, but Restless Spirit is here to change that perception. This New York-based trio has been making waves since 2015, releasing a series of EPs and full-length albums that showcase their unique brand of heavy, bluesy rock. Their latest self-titled album, 'Restless Spirit,' is a testament to their evolution and a refreshing take on the genre.
What makes Restless Spirit stand out is their ability to blend a variety of influences seamlessly. From the mighty riffs of Mastodon and C.O.C. to the groovy vibes of The Sword, they've crafted a sound that feels both familiar and fresh. The album is a perfect soundtrack for a summer day, with its lighter, more rocking vibe and a hint of wistfulness.
The Music
The opening track, 'The Burning Need,' sets the tone with its slick, bluesy hard rock vibe. Paul Alosio's soulful vocals and the band's big, crunchy riffs create an instant connection, drawing you into their world. It's a track that could easily be mistaken for a southern rock classic, showcasing their ability to transcend geographical boundaries.
'Hallowed' continues the journey, offering a more spacey and moody atmosphere. The hooks are there, and the riffs take center stage, as they should. I can't help but hear echoes of Monster Magnet in their sound, especially in the agile and introspective guitar work. It's a track that showcases their ability to create an immersive listening experience.
'Desolations Wake' is a highlight, with its rocked-out, rowdy approach and hard-charging guitar work. It's a song that will make you want to punch a boulder and head straight to your summer playlist. The machismo is palpable, and the energy is infectious.
However, not every track on the album reaches the same heights. 'Red in Tooth and Claw' feels a bit generic, and 'Time and Distance,' while showcasing some powerhouse guitar work, could have benefited from a tighter edit. The nearly 9-minute closer, 'Phantom Pain,' has a 70s psych-rock vibe, but the length starts to feel excessive towards the end.
The Band
At the heart of Restless Spirit is Paul Alosio, the master riff-maker and emotive guitarist. His fretwork provides the foundation for the band's sound, and he excels at crafting powerful, sinuous leads that capture your attention. Alosio's vocals are rough yet melodic, and he delivers with soul and gravitas. Marc Morello's thick basslines rumble and quake, providing the perfect backdrop, while drummer Jon Gusman keeps the groove going with abandon.
Production and Overall Impression
The production on 'Restless Spirit' is a vast improvement over their previous efforts. The guitars have the right weight, the drums are deep and satisfying, and the overall sound is warm and bright. It's an album worth exploring, and I'm excited to see what the future holds for this talented trio. With their talent and the endless spirit that lurks within, I have no doubt they'll continue to evolve and deliver more great music.
