The golf world is buzzing! Rory McIlroy didn't hold back his thoughts on LIV Golf, especially after Brooks Koepka's return to the PGA Tour. It seems the drama in professional golf is far from over.
McIlroy, fresh off a strong start at the 2026 season debut in Dubai, where he shot a 66, didn't mince words when discussing LIV Golf's current situation. He seemed particularly unimpressed with their recent player acquisitions.
"It's not as if they made any huge signings this year, is it?" McIlroy remarked, suggesting a lack of impact from LIV's new additions. He even speculated on the potential for LIV to re-sign Bryson DeChambeau, emphasizing that even a massive investment wouldn't necessarily improve their product. And this is the part most people miss: McIlroy believes that LIV Golf hasn't made any significant moves to boost their brand.
While LIV Golf did bring in some new talent, including Thomas Detry, who won the WM Phoenix Open, and Elvis Smylie, the impact remains to be seen. The league is gearing up for its fifth season, set to kick off in Saudi Arabia next month.
Koepka's departure from LIV Golf and subsequent return to the PGA Tour has certainly stirred the pot. Koepka quickly regained his PGA Tour membership and is set to debut at the Farmers Insurance Open in just two weeks.
But here's where it gets controversial... The PGA Tour also offered an opportunity for DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Cam Smith to return under similar conditions, but none are expected to take it. McIlroy believes that LIV is in a tough spot financially, having already spent billions and potentially needing to spend even more to maintain its current status.
McIlroy's perspective is clear: he's much more comfortable with the PGA Tour. He has consistently advocated for the return of LIV players, highlighting the importance of strengthening the traditional tours. "This is great as it gets Brooks back to where he belongs,” McIlroy said.
What do you think? Do you agree with McIlroy's assessment of LIV Golf's current position? Do you believe that the PGA Tour should welcome back players who left for LIV? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
